Total Shots Metric Overview

FAQ Updated: 2026-01-13

Definition

Total Shots is defined as the sum of all attempts to score, regardless of whether they were successful, off target, or blocked.

Calculation Methods

Primary Calculation

Total Shots is calculated using the following components:

  • Shots on Target
  • Shots off Target
  • Blocked Shots

Formula:

Total Shots = Shots on Target+ Shots off Target+ Blocked Shots

Alternative Calculation

In some data feeds, Total Shots may also be represented as:

  • Shots Inside the Box
  • Shots Outside the Box

Formula:

Total Shots = Shots Inside the Box+Shots Outside the Box

Both calculation paths lead to the same Total Shots value when all components are available.

Data Availability

Not all live matches provide a full breakdown of shot types. Availability depends on:

  • The level of live data coverage
  • The data provider’s feed completeness
  • Match location and competition tier

For example, shots outside the box may not always be supplied during live play.

When any sub‑components are missing, Total Shots should always be treated as the authoritative and reliable metric, even if individual breakdowns are incomplete.
